Financial Overview
Special thanks to all of our donors, Noche Magica contributors, and grantors, including The Oregon Community Fund, New England International Donors, The Ocean Foundation, and so many others who graciously supported us and made our success in FY 2022 a reality.
Our sincere gratitude also extends to all of the local volunteers, community members, contractors, KLM Staff, and Advisory Committee members, who worked passionately and tirelessly to achieve our mission in FY 2022.
The following is a summary of Keep Loreto Magical’s FY 2022 unaudited year-end financials for the fiscal year period July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022.
Financial Notes
Note 1: TOF Administrative Fees: As a fiscally-hosted project of The Ocean Foundation, KLM pays a 10% administrative fee which is deducted from Income at the time the income is recognized. Learn more about the benefits of The Ocean Foundation’s sponsorship of Keep Loreto Magical.
Note 2: New Expense Categories: For the benefit of our donors, starting in 2022, we are presenting our expenses in three major categories: Program, Administrative and Fundraising expenses. Program Expenses are those costs that are spent tangentially and directly on KLM programs in the community, as compared to Administrative or Fund-Raising costs, which indirectly support our mission. By categorizing our expenses in this format, donors have greater transparency into how much of their donations are spent directly on Programs to keep Loreto magical. KLM is proud of its program efficiency, as demonstrated by its ability to consistently earmark a high percentage of donations directly for the programs our donors care about.
It should be noted that this categorization format requires significant calculation effort as well as assumptions about how certain expenses are categorized (e.g., the cost of a tank of gas could fit multiple categories depending upon how the truck is deployed over the course of the week), so we use assumptions and estimates to categorize some of the expenses, which may or may not be valid. Accordingly, while these three major categories provide a reasonable estimate for our donors of how KLM expenses are apportioned, they should not be relied upon as a substitute for the audited consolidated financial statements of KLM's sponsor, The Ocean Foundation.
Note 3: Calculation of Net Income and Net Available Cash: KLM maintains its accounting records on the accrual basis and therefore reflects, in its Net Income line item, the full amount of any grant in the year it is awarded, even if part of that grant has not been received. In FY 2021, we recorded a $30,000 grant from the Oregon Community Fund, which was payable in $10,000 increments in FY 2021, FY 2022 and FY 2023. To date, we have received the first two installments, but not the third. As a result, in order to calculate our Net Available Cash in FY 2022, we must deduct the $10,000 of the third installment and add back the recorded liability of the 10% TOF administrative fee due on the grant once it is received.
