"Limpy" the Pelican is Fully Recovered!

FULL Recovery!

Our Brown Pelican (pelecanus occidentalis) is finally leaving rehabilitation after 4 weeks. We nicknamed "Limpy." Join us for his release back to the wild on Nov 3rd.

Limpy’s Story

Thanks to members of the Loreto community, where a family on La Negrita beach contacted us to assist this beautiful male Pelican Pardo (pelecanos occidentalis). His foot was curled due to apparent vitamin B-2 deficiency. Sardines have a lot of vitamin B-2, so maybe he just couldn't eat enough.

Thank you Wildlife Veterinarian Rebecca Kobelkowsky and Veterinarian Juan Cortes Jr for their invaluable help. They did a brilliant job of creatively fabricating a foot cast out of plastic to uncurl Limpy’s foot.

After 1 month of rehabilitation with lots of food: 25 fresh sardines per day, in the morning and in the afternoon, this young male is going to return to his free and wild state.

Thank you to Everyone Who Made Limpy’s Recovery Possible

Thanks to Antonio Davis, a fisherman who kept this pelican fed! Thanks to Erik Stevens who received a lot of cuts and bites while caring for this bird.

Thank you Russell Demers and Cindy Demers for inspiring us to protect local birds. Thank you to Alexandria Yenzer for helping to find us to help this pelican. Thank you Dr. Juan Cortes and Dr. Rebecca Kobelskowsky for being always available to help. Thank you Chris Burson and Denise Stubbs for always being there. We always value your unconditional support to all animals. Norman Christie thank you for bringing down the Vitamin B-2 - it was a game changer.

Mindfulness - Keeping Loreto Magical

Let's not forget that we have to share this planet with other beings and that they all have an important role in keeping our world healthy.

We all love watching pelicans fly in formation and jump for fish. We feel at peace knowing they exist. These beings are motifs of legends, childhood tales, songs and in many ways symbolize life by the sea. They have soft feathers, and each one is perfect for flying and fishing.

Thank you for taking care of other neighbors and our wildlife, who make our existence on this planet so special.
