Our Estuaries are in Distress
Rainwater is often thought to clean everything. But heavy rainfall from the last storm exposed what we already know - our estuaries are being used as trash bins and toilets.
Trash is thrown in the streams, beaches, and arroyos by residents and visitors; and
When contractors do not supply proper sanitary facilities for their workers, the workers defecate in the streams and arroyos because they have no where else to go.
Heavy rains can wash all this human waste (poop, pee, paper and other trash) to the sea, the shore, the sand, and people swimming along the beach.
Volunteer Clean Up Program
Thanks to a large crew of Keep Loreto Magical volunteers and ZOFEMAT personnel, our estuaries received a much needed cleaning, but we need everyone’s help in preventing further mistreatment of the estuaries.
For 3 days, a six person crew of KLM volunteers spent more than 35 hours of manual labor in the sun to avoid having all this trash go into the sea. More than 5000 pieces of trash were retrieved from the main arroyo that goes from Miramar to Loreto - called La Negrita.
On Day 3, eight people from ZOFEMAT (Maritime Federal Zone) joined us to clean the arroyo. Five contractors in town received denunciations from PROFEPA for not picking up trash from their work sites near the beach, arroyo and estuary.
We hope this will suffice so that the next storm can bring purifying rain without floating trash.
We are so grateful to all of the volunteers who shared their time, sweat and love with our beautiful estuaries. Thank you!
